Bandai released this game in 1994, and it pits Sailor Moon against enemies, such as Kaolinite and her fellow Dust Busters, from the anime’s third season. The second game included in the acquisition is a blindingly pink dedicated handheld called 美少女戦士セーラームーンS: 決める! ハートアタック( Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon S: Decide! Heart Attack). One of our newest acquisitions is a basic fighting game released for the Super Famicom in 1994, entitled 美少女戦士セーラームーンS: 場外乱闘? 主役争奪戦!( Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon: Outside Scuffle? The Competition for a Leader!) In this game, various Sailor Soldiers engage in Street Fighter-style brawls and try to become the new leaders of the Sailor Team. Everything needed to begin your dice battles is included in one box: 24 character cards, each featuring a hero or villain from the Sailor Moon Crystal. But now, thanks to ICHEG, I’m lucky enough to play some of those Sailor Moon games for the first time. I soon found that the series spawned several video games, but I never got lucky enough to play any, as most of the titles were released only in Japan.
I set out to learn all I could about the show and immerse myself in all its forms. The characters’ steely resolve to protect the world from evil and joyful personalities endeared them to me. The Competition for a Leader!) Reading that, you might be thinking “Why ever go on the defensive? As soon as someone attacks, they can just overwhelm the other person.” Well, the beauty of Sailor Moon S is that the broken cancelling mechanics work both ways: you can also cancel out of a block. You can toss out safe hitboxes and then immediately backdash, or cancel the backdash if a hit confirms so that you can follow up with a combo. That’s right you can cancel virtually any move in this game to either retreat or keep up the pressure. In Sailor Moon S, the only thing you can’t cancel is one special move into another. This means that you’re more likely to use moves that safe on block, and look for hit confirms. In most fighting games, what moves you can cancel are limited, and vary from game to game. One key aspect that makes Sailor Moon S game drastically different than any other fighting game is what you can cancel.
